What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is a common condition characterized by pain in the heel of the foot. Plantar Fasciitis is caused by inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of your foot called the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a tissue that connects your heel bone (calcaneus) and toes (metatarsals).

For most people, it is a dull, aching pain in the heel that is aggravated by activity or when you put weight on your foot. You may also feel pain in the arch of your foot or impactions (nagging aches that persist).

Pain may be felt in the heel, on the bottom of your foot, or the outside area of your foot. Other common symptoms include a tender spot where you feel pain on your heel and arch, a burning sensation in the bottom of your feet, and pain when you put weight on your foot.

Some common causes for plantar fasciitis include overuse or stretching of the ligament, an underlying medical disorder, such as diabetes, or a bone spur caused by calcification within the ligament. If you have flat feet or high arches, you may develop plantar fasciitis. With other foot abnormalities, such as a collapsed arch, your chances of developing this condition increase.

The first-line treatment for plantar fasciitis should be to rest and protect your feet from further injury. While this is the first line of treatment, it may not and usually does not provide a cure for the problem.

Treatment options to relieve plantar fasciitis include:

  • Stretching exercises.
  • Custom-made orthotics (shoe inserts to support your foot).
  • Night splints (devices worn at night to keep you from overusing your feet).
  • Rest.

Another option that has been shown to work well is an anti-inflammatory medication.

Do I need surgery for plantar fasciitis?

Most times, surgery is not necessary for treatment. However, it may be needed in some cases. Surgery involves cutting or releasing the ligament to relieve tension on the ligament. Most patients need about 6 to 12 weeks of rest, depending on the severity and effectiveness of your treatment plan. In a few cases, cortisone injections may be helpful in managing plantar fasciitis pain.

If you have pain in your heel, arch, or other foot areas, see one of our foot and ankle specialists. We will help come up with a treatment plan for your specific needs.
