There are easy things you can do to prevent fungal infections from invading your feet.athlete's foot

Despite the fact that fungus is all around us, there are certain measures we can take to ensure that we don’t come down with an unpleasant bout of athlete’s foot. While the condition is harmless, it’s never fun to have to deal with the painful and uncomfortable itching and burning. Our Lake Ridge and Stafford, VA, podiatrists are here to provide some insight into what you can do to keep athlete’s foot at bay.

Sport Shower Shoes

If you are someone who likes to take a shower at your local gym before heading to work, then you’ll certainly want to heed this warning and wear protective sandals or flip-flops whenever you walk around the local gym room or shower facilities (the same goes for your local swimming pool facilities, as well). Why? Fungus just loves damp, warm areas, and so they are more likely to grow in these communal locales. Keep your feet protected with the proper footwear and you won’t get athlete’s foot.

Clean Feet Daily

Just like the rest of us, our feet also pick up dirt and bacteria throughout the day. They can also get pretty sweaty when they’ve been shoved in shoes for hours on end. Making sure that your wash your feet and then dry them thoroughly every day is a great way to keep feet healthy. If you are prone to sweaty feet, make sure to apply an antifungal powder to your feet and your shoes before slipping your feet into them.

Don’t Wear Shoes Twice in a Row

This might seem like an odd request but regardless of whether your feet are naturally sweaty or not, you still want to give your shoes ample time to dry out before placing them back on your feet. Our Lake Ridge and Stafford foot doctor understands that it can be easy to just wear the same shoes day in and day out, but if you want to avoid athlete’s foot then it’s a good idea to let those shoes air out for at least 24 hours before wearing them again.
